Members of an Islamic organisation representing thousands of British Muslim men are concerned that extremist and ignorant religious preachers in some parts of the world are using Islam as a justification for the terrible practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

“FGM is an oppressive cultural practice that has no place in the civilised world," wrote Usman Khan, national spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association of UK, in a press statement on their website.

The practice, the group say, runs contrary to the teachings of Islam and they will continue to welcome any and every opportunity to raise their voices and to campaign against this vile practice.

"It is very worrying that since 2009 at least 4,000 women have been treated in the UK as a result of having been forced to endure this type of mutilation," Mr. Khan further stated.
