He was also the former Vice Chairman of London Councils Transport and Environment Committee and Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2008-2010.

LONDON: Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon has been promoted to Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of the Prime Minister’s reshuffle this week.
His responsibilities will include departmental business in the House of Lords, European programmes, transparency, productivity, procurement and value for money. Lord Ahmad was previously Lord’s Whip for the Department for Communities and Local Government, Home Office, Ministry of Justice and Universities and Science from 2011 until his current appointment.
He was raised to the peerage in 2011 appointed a Lord in Waiting to HM Queen in October 2012.In addition to his extensive business experience he brings to the role over 10 years of experience working in Local Government having served as a councillor in Wimbledon and as a Cabinet Member in Merton from 2002-2012.
He was also the former Vice Chairman of London Councils Transport and Environment Committee and Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2008-2010.The Secretary of State Eric Pickles said: “This is a great appointment and I am delighted to welcome Tariq to my ministerial team.
Lord Ahmad brings with him a wealth of experience from the private sector and Local Government which will be invaluable in taking forward his portfolio.”Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon said: “The department has a fantastic reputation. I look forward to being part of this important agenda which is doing so much to create great places to live and work, give more power to local people and support strong communities across the country.”
