EMPOWERING children to know their rights does not mean we want them to go against their parents and other adults, says Save the Children Fiji CEO Chandra Shekhar.
Mr Shekhar told the Save the Children Fiji's Central Division oratory contest at the Salvation Army Hall on Friday there was some misunderstanding among people that children's empowerment on child rights meant encouraging children to go against adults.
Mr Shekhar said the theme of the contest to "protect children and eliminate violence" was meant to raise awareness among students, parents, teachers and the community about the issue.
Students from schools in the Central Division spoke on their views and urged members of the public to help stop violence against children.
Ahmadiyya Muslim Primary School student Selai Nuisere won the primary division competition while Lynette Vosawale of Assemblies of God High School won the secondary division.
Both students spoke passionately on the issue of child protection and elimination of violence.
They called for the police, parents and members of the public to recognise violence against children and to eliminate it.
Mr Shekhar said parents and teachers should define what violence against children was so that they could differentiate between discipline and violence.
He said they were not saying "spare the rod" but to define what they could do to encourage children to be disciplined.
He said positive discipline was a program organised by Save the Children and showed what discipline could be in terms of understanding the child's problems and using ways to solve them.
