USA: 9/11 Quran Burn Prompts Ore. Inter-Faith Event

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland mosque is hosting an inter-faith celebration in response to a Florida church's decision to stage "International Burn-a-Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11.

Nearly a dozen religious organizations are expected to gather Saturday at the mosque.

Organizers said they hope to foster understanding and respect among religions.

"We believe the burning not just of the Quran -- of any holy scripture, be it the Torah, the Bible, any scripture of a religious group -- to burn it is not only inappropriate, it's hurtful. And so it's just unnecessary and we don't see any positive that could come out of it," said Harris Zafar, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.


Standing Together: A Vigil of Inter-Faith Outreach starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Portland Rizwan Mosque on Southwest 35th Drive.

    In Britain, the world head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community addressed millions of people from a live telecast from the Baitul Futuh Mosque, in Morden, London.

    Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said Mr Jones' threats spread "hatred" around the world, adding: "Religious extremism, be it Christian extremism, Muslim extremism, or any other kind, is never a true reflection of the religion."
