In reference to the comments published in The Jakarta Post on Oct. 5 by Muradali Shaikh, allow me to share my views.

The Ahmadiyah movement was very actively involved in the freedom-struggle of Pakistan, including the whole of Kashmir, from the British Empire.

The founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, fully realized this. In recognition and appreciation of this he chose Zafarullah Khan (a devout Ahmadi) as the first foreign minister of Pakistan.


It is naive to call Zafarullah Khan’s sincere efforts advocating the case of Kashmir in the United Nations a “rant”. If the government of Pakistan had any doubt about Khan’s sincerity, it would never have chosen him to plead the case. This is not simply an Ahmadi assertion. Here is an excerpt from one neutral newspaper of the time, Quaid-e-Azam.

It wrote in its January 1949 edition, “At present, the Quadiani Jemaat Ahmadiyah is on top among all Muslim organizations. It is well-organized…”

It played a significant role in establishing the Muslim League, of whom the founder of Pakistan was president.

In our opinion, with sincerity and dedication Ahmadis have been taking part in the Jihad of Kashmir, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Mujahideen of Azad Kashmir, and in doing so have made brave sacrifices where few other Muslim organizations have.

Moreover, Ahmadis do not call anyone who claims to be Muslim an infidel. It is the non-Ahmadi Muslims who consider the Ahmadis infidels.

Even during the times of the founder of the Ahmadiyah movement, it was the non-Ahmadi Ulemas (Muslim teachers) who made Fatwas (religious edicts) labeling Ahmadis kafir (heathen). The founder of the Ahmadiyah movement gave religious and logical reasons to prove that he was Muslim, but to no avail.

After a very long time of patience, he said “If someone considers us kafir, but we do not consider him so, then surely we oppose a Hadith [saying of the Prophet of Islam] and a matter which is agreed upon [by all Muslims].”
