HARRISBURG -- The Harrisburg chapter of the Ahamdiyya Muslim Community, the oldest Muslim-American organization in the United States, will have a free open house at 11 a.m. Sunday in Lakeside Lutheran Church/Harrisburg Mosque, 245 Division St., Harrisburg.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Harrisburg recently bought the Lakeside Lutheran Church in Harrisburg and plans to convert it to a mosque. Several families from the Chambersburg area attend the Harrisburg mosque.

"The open house is intended as an outreach to the community," said Akram Khalid, Chambersburg, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Central Pennsylvania. "We want to be a good neighbor."

A speaker will present a talk on the Ahmadiyya Muslim beliefs and lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Some vegetarian dishes will be available.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long-awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace.

Founded in 1889, the community spans more than 190 countries. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, was established in 1920.
