USA: Oshkosh's First Mosque Opens Quietly

"We want to make sure people know that we're here and they feel we are a good addition to the neighborhood  Even before we got the mosque, we went around the neighborhood to distribute our Muslims for pPeace fliers, and we got a very positive reaction to that." [Khurram Ahmed, AMC]

After an extensive debate, the first mosque in the city of Oshkosh opened quietly.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community recently bought the former Seefeld Funeral Home in the 300-block of Eagle Street, and they've been holding prayer services for almost three weeks.

No longer having to meet inside a house, Oshkosh-area Muslims are worshiping in the mosque after making a transition some say is long overdue.

"As a community it is a major milestone that we have our own place that we can go and worship and where we can invite others to come and see us worship and have talks about matters of faith," Umair Ahmed said.

Given the name Masjid Qamar, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community continues to renovate the property.

The most visible change is a new privacy fence, which was requested by neighbors. In November some of them opposed the mosque, asking the city council to deny a permit for the building, citing traffic concerns.

"We did our part, and we continue to do our part. To any decisions that we are making, that impacts them, we discuss with them and ask for their input," Khurram Ahmad of the Muslim community said.

Members of the mosque plan to hold an open house next spring. In the meantime, they plan to continue to reach out to the community with the hope of gaining acceptance.

"We want to make sure people know that we're here and they feel we are a good addition to the neighborhood  Even before we got the mosque, we went around the neighborhood to distribute our Muslims for pPeace fliers, and we got a very positive reaction to that," Ahmed said.
