A PARAMEDIC from Melton who helped treat survivors of the Haiti earthquake reflected on his experiences this week - which marked the first anniversary of the disaster which claimed 300,000 lives.
Dr Mark Bryers, a trauma care co-ordinator in Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s training and development department, spent about a fortnight in Haiti last year as part of a Humanity First UK medical team.
Father-of-two Mark (46), of Scalford Road, along with the rest of the team, moved between the island’s capital Port-au-Prince and Carrefour administering care, treating fractures and wounds and helping those with chronic conditions.
After returning home Mark spent about six months giving talks to groups all around the country, including Year 5 Brownlow Primary School pupils and local cubs, scouts and beavers.
In May, Mark is flying out to America with other Humanity First medical response team members, to provide disaster response training to American and Canadian colleagues.
He said: “The idea is to prepare them for providing care in a disaster zone environment, put them under pressure and to see how they cope and work together.
“Humanity First are still out there and have long-term medical camps in Port-au-Prince and Seguin. They’re still treating in the region of 500 people a week and looking after a lot of orphans in outlying areas. It has moved onto the relief and after care stage and they’re also doing a lot now to teach people English.”
