Muslim Women: Maintaining our religious identities within an American context

Their participation gave the Salvation Army staff and regular volunteers an opportunity to finish their last minute Christmas shopping or cooking, the hungry visitors got a hot lunch, area Muslims honored the memory of Jesus and also served the community at holiday time. A win-win-win situation!

Interfaith in Action

On Christmas Eve, about a dozen volunteers from the local Ahmadiyya Muslim Community prepared and served 170 hot lunches to the homeless and the working poor at The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in Schenectady.

Their participation gave the Salvation Army staff and regular volunteers an opportunity to finish their last minute Christmas shopping or cooking, the hungry visitors got a hot lunch, area Muslims honored the memory of Jesus and also served the community at holiday time. A win-win-win situation!

Perhaps many Americans don’t know that Muslims believe in the blessed Virgin Mary and in Jesus Christ (see earlier blogpost,  Jesus, Son of Mary, upon him be peace). Jesus is mentioned in the Quran many more times than Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon them both.


The Muslim volunteers focused on what is common in both Christian and Islamic beliefs (and in the beliefs of other religions too):  serving the less fortunate and being good to your neighbors. That’s interfaith in action!
