Egyptian protests: Stabilize Arab world with moderate Islam

Who are the moderate Muslims? Those who have practiced and propagated a moderate and tolerant version of Islam, which teaches justice, sanctity of life, separation of church and state, freedom of religion and speech, universal human rights and empowerment of women.

The upheaval in the Arab world will have consequences. President Barack Obama magnified the hopes and dreams of the Arab world in his 2009 Cairo speech. But his actions and deeds did not deliver. Obama may have inadvertently exacerbated the explosive combination of frustrated expectations and business-as-usual that pressurized the current eruption of resentment, anger and alienation among the Arab people.

The revolution we are seeing is galvanized by religion, envy, hatred and global political activism. In earlier times, it was easier to control 1 million people than to physically kill 1 million people. Today, it is infinitely easier to kill 1 million people than to control 1 million people. This genie will not go back in the bottle.

The solution is finding and getting behind moderate Muslims. Who are the moderate Muslims? Those who have practiced and propagated a moderate and tolerant version of Islam, which teaches justice, sanctity of life, separation of church and state, freedom of religion and speech, universal human rights and empowerment of women. These are the people who will bring a welcome change in Arab governments.
