Ibrahim Bonsu makes a plea over the persecution of Ahmadiyya Muslims in Indonesia
Once again the Indonesian government have shown that members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Indonesia are not entitled to be accorded the same justice enjoyed by other citizens. On February 6, three members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pandeglang, Banten Province, were brutally murdered when a mob numbering about 1,000 descended on their place of worship.
This occurred in the full view of the police, thereby indicating no shortage of witnesses for criminal proceedings. However – no surprise here – sentences of three to six months were what were handed to those who committed these monstrous atrocities.
The gruesome videos of these barbaric killings could still be watched on YouTube. To add insult to the situation, one Ahmadi member, Deden Sudjana, who had to defend himself from this brutal attack was jailed for six months, a term which is heavier than many of the attackers. Deden almost had his hand severed during this attack.
The only "crime" of the Ahmadi Muslims is for accepting Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Qadiani (on whom be peace) as a subordinate Prophet and the long awaited Promised Messiah and Mahdi in Islam. A belief which is rejected by mainstream Muslims and who declare Ahmadis as heretics.
This incident should not be a concern only for members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community but all right-minded people who uphold freedom of conscience in this civilised world. Misguided so-called Muslim "scholars" continue to hijack freedom and tolerance in religion by turning a blind eye on the Quranic injunction that "There is no compulsion in religion'' (Chapter 2: 256-257). When disagreement in matters of faith arises, the Holy Quran commands Muslims to say "For you your religion, and for me my religion'' (Holy Quran, Chapter 109: 6-7). Ahmadi Muslims operate under the slogan "Love for all hatred for none''. They believe the best Jihad is self-reformation and being useful to the society we live in.
There is no doubt there are some Muslims outside Indonesia who support the injustices imposed on Ahmadis for their belief. So, once again, I am calling on all concerned citizens who stand for justice and human rights (irrespective of faith, race, colour and creed) not to treat such issues as another "morning's news headline" but to speak against this in whatever medium they may have, to bring the responsible authorities to account for their continuous embarrassment to equal rights and justice.
Please don't say it's a Muslim issue or Indonesian issue, because what goes around comes around and we're all involved in the fight for global peace. Please help to make the world a better place for you and for me.
Ibrahim Bonsu is the Leicester branch youth co-ordinator of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association.
