Excerpts from the Live Radio interview of Dr Khalid Minhas, Director of Public Affairs Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Miami broadcast on 850 WFTL ‘The Joyce Kaufman Show’ -September 5, 2011:
Joyce: I received an invitation for ‘Muslims for Life’ Blood Drive. It is being conducted by a group I know very little about but I’m anxious to learn more about and we have on air Public Affairs Director, Khalid Minhas. This is fascinating for me because one of the things that came out of 9/11 was a lot of discomfort and not knowing what Islam is, what Muslims believe in. You are part of a very different group of Muslims; maybe you can tell us more about it and then where we can give blood.
Khalid: Thank you for having me on your show. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the oldest Muslim organization in the United States, established in 1921. We are Muslims who believe in the Messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India. Starting last year, we effectively conducted ‘Muslims for Peace’ and ‘Muslims for Loyalty’ campaigns to emphasize the true teachings of Islam. To show that in Islam, life is sacred and it upholds its sanctity, at the 10th anniversary of 9/11, we are conducting the ‘Muslims for Life’ campaign with a goal to collect 10,000 units of blood that will ultimately save 30,000 lives.
Joyce: So this is happening all over the country and Miami is not the only place where this is going on?
Khalid: Absolutely. This is a nationwide campaign, 220 sites have been set up and the campaign has already started in certain cities and two of the drives will be held at Capitol Hill, Washington DC. We have three sites in South Florida to donate blood.
Joyce: One of them is here in Fort Lauderdale, Holy Cross Hospital
Khalid: Yes, the drive is scheduled at Holy Cross Hospital on Sep 8, Hallandale Beach Cultural Center on Sep 9 and Yellow Green Farmer’s Market on Sep 11.
Joyce: You are inviting everybody?
Khalid: Yes, we are inviting everyone to join us in this noble cause, where we want to show our fellow Americans that terrorists shed blood on Sep 11, 2001 but this year, to mark the 10th anniversary of that tragedy, we are honoring the innocent lives lost that day, by giving the gift of life back. This is a solemn tribute and we invite all to donate blood.
Joyce: I can’t think of a better way to do it actually. So I appreciate and that’s why I wanted to let you come on and explain. I’m going to put a link on where to go, when to go, on my website and Khalid I appreciate your spending some time with us. Please call me back or email me how much blood you collected. I suspect you’ll do better nationwide than you actually thought.
Khalid: I would like to conclude by saying that Islam teaches peace, upholds sanctity of life and this is a reaffirmation of the Biblical teaching that ‘….whosoever killed a person…it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and whoso gave life to one, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind.’ (Holy Quran 5:33)
Joyce: That’s what I’ve been talking about, reaffirmation, modern version where fanaticism is taken out of any religion, whether Christian, Jew or Muslim or whoever. Some of the language of the holy text is now used as almost parables on how to conduct ourselves. And when a group gets together and says we are American; this guy’s proudest moment is we are the longest standing Muslim group in America and we are going to organize a blood drive, they have rejected the events of 9/11, pretty incredible! I’ve read, looked up the website, I think the mainstream media doesn’t really care, they have an investment in keeping all of this sort of responsive, back and forth, going on.
