Six shots rang out in quiet street and Imam son lay dying - Gangs' gun battle bloodbath on streets of Edinburgh
HORRIFIED witnesses of a gun battle told last night how they heard six shots ring out — then saw the son of a Muslim cleric lying dying in the street.
Mohammed Omar Abdi was killed after a car chase through Edinburgh ended with the shoot-out between rival gangs in a quiet suburb.
Last night one passer-by told how he was coming home from a night out with a pal when they stumbled across the grisly scene in the city’s Willowbrae area.
He said: “We heard what we thought was a car backfiring — it turned out to be a gun. We heard six shots altogether.
“When we went over the road we saw a body lying on the ground. I called 999 and when I went back, the police had arrived and were doing CPR.”
It’s believed a VW people carrier was forced off the road before those inside were shot.
The witness told how he saw men gathered around the scene of the horror and a Vauxhall car speeding down the street.
He added: “Before the police arrived, a white Corsa with a lot of people in it shot off down the road. When the guy was lying on the ground I noticed a baseball bat and a golf club which was broken and mangled behind a car.
“A couple of guys came and stood beside me. They asked what had happened and when I told them, they got really cagey.”
Mohammed, 25, from Leith, died just weeks after cops arrested him and his cleric dad in a major drugs raid.
Omar Abdi, 57 — an Imam at Edinburgh’s main mosque — was arrested on May 2.
The pair appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and were freed on bail. A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed Mohammed Abdi was the son of Omar Abdi, and said Omar has “a role” at Edinburgh Central Mosque.
Nobody was available for comment from the mosque, but insiders said Omar was the second Imam and not the main cleric.
Last night, residents in the block of flats where Mohammed lived told of their shock at his death.
One neighbour said: “I had armed police at my door, it was terrible. They had guns and I was really scared.” Friends of the victim also paid tribute to him on Twitter. Shocked pal Ami Islam wrote: “Cannot believe such a humble and loyal friend has lost his life. Especially by the hands of another. Always had my back.”
Rhona Drysdale added: “RIP Mo Abdi. Still can’t believe it.”
Police last night reassured residents living near the scene of the killing that it had been an isolated incident.
Chief Inspector Mark Patterson said: “Things like this are incredibly rare within Edinburgh and the capital remains a safe place.
“We remain keen to speak with anyone who saw anything suspicious or who saw vehicles being driven erratically.”
