He left his mark

After 9/11 in 2001, many people in this nation took a pretty dim view of Muslims and their Islamic religion. National attention focused on Jihad, the Muslim holy war against infidels.

In July, 2004, a new Islamic imam (community and worship leader), Shamshad Nasir, was assigned to the Los Angeles regional area, and took up residence in the Mosque on Ramona Avenue in north Chino.

He brought to us a clearer view of Islam. He  quickly made his acquaintance with community leaders to assure them that generally Muslims are peaceful people and that his branch of the Islamic faith, the Ahmadiyya community, fostered non-violence and abhorred the militancy taking place in the Near and Far East, where terrorists were based and using Jihad as an excuse to attack us.

Through these personal local contacts and frequent news articles, columns and open houses, Imam Shamshad gave us a new and more favorable view of the Islamic philosophy held by American-Muslims. He also supervised the rebuilding of his mosque, which had been damaged by accidental fire, and invited those of other faiths to visit.

This month he left for a new assignment in Chicago. We wish him continued success, for he has left his mark on our community and given us new insights into his faith.
