A campaign to shed light on Islam is gaining popularity in Manitoba.

“Meet a Muslim Family” was created to connect Muslim and non-Muslim families.

The campaign encourages people to ask questions about Islam.

It hopes to separate those who practice the religion from extremists overseas.

The campaign was started in Toronto by leaders in the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

In Manitoba, 24 families have signed up, and it's gaining traction across the country.

“We got 300 e-mails from different people, like all around [Canada] in different areas. And they want to come and they want to learn more about Islam,” said Noreen Nasir, a volunteer with Meet a Muslim Family.

On Sunday night Nasir welcomed her first guests as part of the program.

April Gowler attended with her daughter and friends. She says she was eager to learn more about the religion from people who practice it first-hand.

“A lot of those pre-conceived notions are not always rooted in fact. They’re rooted in just stuff you pick up on the way. And if I can meet somebody and learn from them, I think my facts will be better,” said Gowler.

The campaign officially lasts for two weeks, but Nasir says she would be happy to meet with people after the official end date.
