Muslim clerics vow to take Mumtaz Qadri case to the Supreme Court

The family of Salman Taseer, a former Pakistan governor who was assassinated by his own bodyguard for speaking out against a controversial blasphemy law, this week rejected an offer from Islamist parties to pardon the killer in return for money.

The family, however, welcomed the clerics’ call for a healthy debate on the Mumtaz Qadri case.

Qadri, a former elite force guard, shot Taseer dead at a market in Islamabad in January 2011 weeks after the Punjab governor met Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, sentenced to death for blasphemy.

Shahbaz Bhatti, a Catholic minister, was assassinated two months after Taseer’s killing. The two were vocal critics of the misuse of harsh blasphemy laws and were pushing for reforms.

On Tuesday, clerics representing Braveli Sunni groups offered money to the relatives of Taseer for the acquittal of Mumtaz Qadri, whose death sentence was upheld by a Pakistani court earlier this week.

“We are ready for a healthy debate on the Mumtaz Qadri issue,” a cleric said. “We will to go to the Supreme Court to win Qadri’s acquittal.”

In a statement, Taseer’s family rejected the offer.

"On behalf of my family, I would like to state in no unclear terms that any such offer will be taken as an affront to the memory of my father, who laid his life down for a principle," said a statement issued by Taseer's eldest son Shaan Taseer. "There shall be no discussion on the topic of blood money with me or any member of my family."

"Therefore the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan, the Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, the Pakistan Sunni Tehreek and the Pakistan Sunni Alliance are strongly requested not to entertain the thought of making such an offer," he further asserted.
