The Ahmadiyya Muslim community of New Zealand held its 8th Annual walkathon on the 12th March 2016 with the participants walking up to 10 km to raise money for charity. The thousands of dollars raised through the walk will go to supporting the New Zealand Blind Foundation and Humanity First charities. The walk forms part of number of initiatives that the community undertakes through out the year to support those most in need.

“The founder of our community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (May peace be upon him) said over a hundred years ago – ‘My desire, my wish and my objective is to serve humanity. It is my job, my faith, my inspiration, and my way’ – this is the teaching we as true muslims hold close to our hearts, and what motivates us in carrying out our charity work” says the community spokesman Mr Sabhan Shah. “The blind foundation has been a worthy recipient of the money we have raised over the years and we will continue to work with them in the future to provide help and support to the needy in New Zealand.”

This year’s walkathon was held in the Barry Curtis park in Flat Bush, and had 79 participants with representatives from the AA head office as well as the Blind foundation. A total sum of $11,500 was raised, with none of it going towards the administration of the event which was organised and managed by a team of volunteers from the Ahmmadiyya Muslim community. The participants were treated to a barbeque and sausage sizzle at the end sponsored by Mike Peru NZ.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a worldwide reformist movement in Islam, with millions of followers in over 200 countries. It is acknowledged worldwide for its sincere efforts to establish global peace, and for its work towards charitable causes.
