"Islam by definition is peace in all aspects, it promotes the harmony of society. [Attacks] should be blamed on that person who is taking something wrong."

GRAND CHUTE — A local Muslim woman is taking matters into her own hands to increase awareness about her religion in the community.

And the effort included a full-page ad in a local newspaper.

Since moving to Grand Chute a few months ago, Laura Pilatin has noticed many different reactions to her Muslim faith.

Pilatin said, "I have been pleasantly surprised, the people here have been very kind and polite and tolerant."

But she says, the reaction isn't always positive.

"I will admit when I interact with people, there's always kind of an elephant in the room. They want to ask, they don't know what to think, they're maybe a little bit scared," she said.

Now, she's hoping to change that. She personally purchased an advertisement in the Appleton Post Crescent, encouraging people to learn about Islam.

Khurram Ahmad, President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Oshkosh, said, "I believe it's a positive, its an effort we have to do to counterbalance the negativity that surrounds the Muslim community in general and Islam."

Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Oshkosh have a similar vision, regularly distributing flyers and hosting community events.

That included an event to talk about the December 2015 San Bernardino attack.

Ahmad said, "Islam by definition is peace in all aspects, it promotes the harmony of society. [Attacks] should be blamed on that person who is taking something wrong."

Pilatin says she hopes her efforts will continue to expand.

"Just be open, ask your questions, and all these fears and suspicions will go away," Pilatin said.

Reminding that Islam means peace and denounces terrorism.

Pilatin says she hopes to keep the advertisement running in the Post Crescent once a month.
