New Delhi -- Rajya Sabha member Partap Singh Bajwa called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here today, demanding 10 per cent reservation in security forces for youths from Punjab’s border villages.
...
During the meeting, which lasted for about 15 minutes, the Congress leader urged Modi to intervene in the completion of 40-km Qadian-Beas rail link sanctioned in 2013 during the UPA rule. He handed over two letters in this connection.
Bajwa said the Prime Minister was receptive and assured of positive consideration on the matter.
...
On the rail link, Bajwa said, “The project is of significance because Qadian is the headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslims. Beas is the headquarters of the Radha Soami sect.”
________
The project was first sanctioned in the pre-independence era during 1928-29 but Partition ensured that it never saw the light of day for over eight decades.
The track, which was the brainchild of pre-Partition Qadian leader Sir Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, would finally see the light of day.
At present, Qadian and Beas are connected through a 100-km long circuitous rail route via Amritsar and Batala.
“The Qadian to Beas rail link will provide a direct and shorter route reducing the travel time between the two places separated only by 39 kms. The extension of the railway line from Qadian to Beas, connects the region directly to the main Amritsar - Delhi line and will add greatly to the economic and social development of the area,” Pratap Singh Bajwa had stated in December 2011.
