Nepal is 1 of 4 countries that have laws banning conversion of their citizens away from the majority religion, a policy gaining popularity in South and Southeast Asia.
Anti-conversion laws are in place in parts of India and throughout Nepal, Myanmar (Burma) and Bhutan, while Sri Lanka and one province in Pakistan are considering similar bills, according to The Christian Post.
The laws, which regulate the act of converting to another religion, are aimed primarily at Christian missionary work. Several nations in the region also prohibit blasphemy and apostasy.
The wording of the laws could be interpreted to exclude social work, praying for the sick and/or evangelism, the Post reported.
