LAHORE, Pakistan, July 2 (UPI) -- The alleged masterminds of attacks on the minority Ahmadiyya religious community in Lahore were arrested along with 10 others, police in Pakistan said Friday.
Police officials in Lahore said they arrested several people connected with a May attack on a mosque in the Garhi Shahu neighborhood of Lahore.
Attackers throwing hand grenades and firing weapons in the Model Town neighborhood of Lahore killed an estimated 100 people in the mosque attack.
Ahmadis consider themselves Muslims. Islamabad ruled against their claims in the 1970s and Sunni and Shiite extremists have often targeted the minority group.
Police seized 100 assault rifles, 18 suicide vests and more than 40,000 pounds of explosives during their raids on the suspects Friday, Pakistan's Dawn news agency reports.
There are thought to be about 3 million or 4 million Ahmadis in Pakistan enduring "the most severe legal restrictions and officially sanctioned discrimination" of the country's religious minorities, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom says.
The Pakistani Taliban was blamed for the attacks.
