Peshawar: Suspected militants killed a member of the minority Ahmedi sect and injured his son in an attack in northwest Pakistan's Mardan district today, police said.

The attackers, who were on a bike, shot dead Mehmud and injured his son Arif in Muslimabad town of Mardan district.

Arif was recently recognized for displaying valour during a botched attempt by a suicide bomber to storm an Ahmedi mosque in Muslimabad in September.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister had granted a cash award of Rs 50,000 to Arif for his bravery.

According to close sources the victim was sprayed with 24 bullets and killed on the spot while two other, including victim's son were injured in that attack and taken to hospital.

Muslimabad has a sizeable population of Ahmedis, who have been the target of a string of attacks by pro-Taliban militants this year and the the victim had lost another member of his family in anti-Ahmadiyya attacks.

Previously his nephew was killed by Anti-Ahmadi terrorists of Pakistan because of his faith

In May, 95 people were killed when suicide attackers stormed two Ahmedi mosques in Lahore.

Ahmedis consider themselves Muslim but they were declared non-Muslims through a constitutional amendment in 1974.

A decade later, they were legally barred from proselytising or identifying themselves as Muslims in Pakistan.

According to some sources in the Pakistani media, approximately 4.5 million Ahmedis live across the country.
