The Golkar faction at the House of Representatives is planning to propose that a joint ministerial decree banning the Ahmadiyah religious sect from proselytizing be made into a law.
"[This initiative] is crucial to provide a strong legal basis for every inter religious case," one of the faction's secretaries, Ade Komarudin, told a press conference at the House on Wednesday.
Ahmadiyah mosques and homes in Indonesia have been the target of intimidation and attacks reportedly not only committed by civilians but also by the authorities. The latest incident happened over the weekend in a village in Cikeusik, Pandeglang, Banten, when a mob of 1,500 people attacked a house guarded by around 25 Ahmadis. Three Ahmadis were killed in the attack.
Critics have blamed the joint ministerial decree signed in 2008 by the home minister, religious affairs minister and the attorney general for fueling the violence against Ahmadiyah.
The decree bans Ahmadiyah from proselytizing. Last year, Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said Ahmadiyah “must be disbanded immediately” because it violated the decree.
On Wednesday, the Golkar faction criticized the government for failing to protect minority groups.
The party issued the statement in response to the Cikeusik massacre and an incident in Temanggung, Central Java, on Tuesday in which mobs torched three churches.
