President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono mentioned again that violent acts destroy the principles of the country which places high regards to multiculturalism and inter-religious harmony.

“[Violence] destroys the values, norms and principles of a law-based country, a democratic country and a country that places high regard to multiculturalism and inter-religious harmony,” he said during his welcoming speech at the National Lunar New Year celebration in North Jakarta on Monday.

The country has witnessed two brutal attacks in the past weeks. Last Sunday, a violent mob lynched three members of the Ahmadiyah congregation in Cikeusik, Banten. Last Tuesday, an angry crowd, dissatisfied with court proceedings in a blasphemy trial, destructed churches in Temanggung.

The president added that issues between people of different religions must be resolved peacefully, guided by the constitution and existing laws as well as regulations.

“Let us prevent and keep away from violence in solving those problems,” he said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

He further emphasized that Indonesia was a multicultural and multi-religious country of law and democracy. Thus, everyone must respect and put forwards tolerance.
