Faith and Extremism: White House Calls Muslims to Help Fight Terrorism

In 1976, the mainstream Pakistani Muslims dropped Ahmadis from the top of minarets and dragged them through the streets behind motorcycles. If anyone knows about radicalized Islam, it is the Ahmadis. Sadly, we know because we are the target of their hatred.

Eileen Sullivan contradicts herself in the AJC when she says that the government is pressuring Muslims to co-operate more when it comes to radicalized Muslims. At the end of her own article, Sullivan admits: “The Muslim community has been integral in tipping off law enforcement in many of the plots uncovered over the past two years.” Gee, if she’d started her article with that piece of information, you would wonder why the government is pressuring Muslims at all.

Personally, as an Ahmadi-Muslim, I am very happy to hear that the White House is sending Denis McDonough to a mosque for an interfaith dialogue. Why hasn’t it ever happened before?
Any olive branch is a good olive branch! Furthermore, it is exciting to hear that at least one Muslim community has a good reputation “for its cooperation with the FBI and its rejection of the al-Qaida brand of Islam.” I am sure there are many more.

On Sunday, a rally was held in New York, protesting the nature of the hearings because they target the Muslim community. That is a sad day for Islam. The Promised Messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, predicted over one hundred years ago that a day would come when people were ashamed to be Muslim. How could he have been blessed with such knowledge unless he was a prophet of God?

What disturbed me the most is that “New York Republican Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee that is holding the hearings, thinks the Muslim community can and should do more to help law enforcement thwart these attacks.” I think that in order to justify the significant cost of the Homeland Security to America, Mr. King needs to assert something. Why not suggest that the Muslim Community help more? He has a scapegoat if anything goes wrong. Of course, if someone knows something, they should speak up. That is the only intelligent decision for all Americans. I just can’t help thinking that radicals don't announce their plans. A case in point—Timothy McVeigh.

The way Sullivan presents Bledsoe’s name change sounds as if she has uncovered a radical. Bledsoe changed his name to Abdul Hakim Muhammad. As a Muslim, I have to admire his choice of name. First of all, Hakim means “healer.” That is the antithesis of killing. Secondly, he put “Abdul” first, which is correct. God is The Healer, so he cannot say he is the healer, but rather the servant of the All Mighty Healer. It denotes a very humble statement. And there isn’t a Muslim in the world who can dislike the name Muhammad. Unfortunately, his actions did not live up to his name.

If Mr. King approached me, I would have to tell him, “I’m sorry, I don’t know any radical Muslims. I can’t help you.” Would I be a traitor to America then? No. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community doesn’t have any radicals. If anyone engaged in such behavior, the caliph, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, in England, would ex-communicate him. To punish him, we would not accept his money. Administratively, he would not belong to our community; however, there is a finer point which must acknowledged: Ahmadis must bury him as an Ahmadi, because God is our judge. We are not the ultimate judge of his deeds.

So, it could be said that we are not cooperating with Homeland Security, but it would be more accurate to say that we absolutely do not tolerate radicalism in our community.

Maybe that’s why Mr. McDonough chose another mosque…

What the United States can do to cut radical Islam off at its roots is to put pressure on countries like Pakistan for treating Ahmadi-Muslims as if they are not Muslims at all. Threatening to stop any financial aid should get their attention.

The mainstream Muslims of Pakistan banded together and agreed to wipe the kalima off our mosques and put men in jail for saying “I bear witness that Muhamed is the Messenger of Allah.” They let the Ahmadis get shot last May. While the police had guns, they didn’t do anything to help the Ahmadis praying in Lal Mosque in Lahore. Basically, they waited outside until it was over.

In 1976, the mainstream Pakistani Muslims dropped Ahmadis from the top of minarets and dragged them through the streets behind motorcycles. If anyone knows about radicalized Islam, it is the Ahmadis. Sadly, we know because we are the target of their hatred.

Yet, we do not respond in kind. Our caliph calls for prayer, not revenge.

You can see the video of the Ahmadis who were murdered in cold blood last month in Indonesia. I don’t have the stomach for it. President Obama could put pressure on the government. He declared, not two months ago, that Indonesia was a model of peace. President Obama could also put pressure on governments who tolerate such criminal behavior.

The pot starts boiling in another country, but it spills into America, burning us with its blazing hatred.
