The National Peace Council (NPC) has appealed to politicians and Ghanaians in general to desist from acts that can undermine the peace of the country.
It asked Ghanaians to draw lessons from the civil conflicts in some neighbouring countries, particularly how those conflicts had led to the destruction of social infrastructure and displacement of the people.
Making the appeal through the Daily Graphic, the acting Chairman of the NPC and Ameer and Missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana, Maulvi Wahab Adam, said Ghana was now regarded by the international community as an oasis of peace and stability in Africa.
He said it was, therefore, imperative for Ghanaians to jealously guard the positive international image it had earned by refraining from acts and utterances that could undermine the peace and stability of the country.
Maulvi Adam lauded President J. E. A. Mills and former President J. A. Kufuor for their recent meeting at the Castle, Osu.
“The NPC thinks that these are ways of consolidating democracy in the country,” he said, expressing the hope that the meeting of the two statesmen would be a good example to other Ghanaians.
He said the meeting, coming at a time when the political temperature was very high, was a noble gesture that would help reduce the temperature and, consequently, deepen the country’s fledgling democracy.
He commended the two statesmen for the maturity they exhibited, pointing out that their meeting would give a strong signal to all Ghanaians that “we are all one people who should live together in unity, mutual respect and co-operation, to bring progress and tranquility to the country.”
Maulvi Adam stressed the need for more of such meetings to maintain a healthy political relationship and called on the political parties to take a cue from what the two statesmen had done to foster dialogue.
