Minister says letter from US Congress about Ahmadis not unusual

Minister of Religious Affairs Suryadharma Ali said a recent letter asking Indonesia to stop persecuting Ahmadis, signed by 27 members of the United States Congress and addressed to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, was “a usual thing”.

He said it was common for the U.S. Congress to send such letters. “So, we consider it something ordinary as well,” he said as quoted by Antara.


In the letter, dated March 15, the congressmen expressed “deep concern” about decrees issued by provincial authorities banning Ahmadiyah followers from practicing their beliefs publicly.

It also addressed last month’s attack on Ahmadis that killed three.

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said the government would study the letter.
