The Great Calamity; What a Great Calamity!

And what should make thee know what the Great Calamity is?

The day when men will be like scattered moths;

And mountains will be like carded wool;

(Al-Qura'n - 101:2-10)

These are the verses taken from the Quran as a description of the Day of Judgment being called “A Great Calamity”.  Man is warned about the coming of such a day when life as we know will end and everything on earth will be destroyed.  Unlike a few who have been trying to convince people otherwise for the past few months, Muslims believe that no one but God Almighty knows exactly when that day will come.
The leader of this movement is 89 years old Harold Camping, who runs the Family radio. For someone who already predicted September 6th, 1994 to be Judgment Day, credibility of this new date and the mathematical calculation he used to make these statements, seem questionable for any rational person.

We, the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believe that the much awaited Messiah of the Christian and Muslim faith traditions already came almost a century ago in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian. It is our belief that the second coming of Jesus of Nazareth was not meant in a literal sense but rather in a metaphorical sense. Our holy book the Quran and the words of our Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) point towards many undeniable physical and other evidences that were fulfilled with his coming. So I can safely speak on behalf of my community that at least our wait for the second coming of Jesus is over.

Although, I personally do not believe that on Saturday, May 21st the world is coming to an end I can surely see some signs of the latter days appearing in the societies all over the world which were prophesized in Islam and in other faiths. One of the signs of the latter days mentioned by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was that men would dress like women and vice versa. The increased frequency in natural disasters can be counted as another signas well as wars, destruction and chaos all over the world.

Just to see this group holding signs of the end of the world this close in time, cautioning you that it might, makes one think. Is it really true, are we going to see the world finish with our own eyes? Are we ready to be judged by the Creator? Have we done enough to improve ourselves? Were we there to help the needy when we had the chance? Did we use the time on this earth the way we were supposed to? Did we follow the right path?

But frankly, being a Muslim, it really does not matter if the Day of Judgment comes this Saturday or few hundred Saturdays later. True Muslims work towards being ready for this day their whole lives.

And since nobody but God Almighty, could say with certainty about the exact time and date of this “Great Calamity” to happen, even acknowledged by Jesus (PBUH) when he said, “But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark: 13:32), wouldn’t it be wise to make the changes right now? Let’s try to make peace and stop fighting, help the poor today, show kindness when it is needed so that when the actual day comes, we won’t have a worry in our minds and are ready to face anything that comes our way with peace of mind and heart.
