Ghana: Ahmadiyya Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adzha festival with prayers

Accra, Nov. 6, GNA –   Maulvi Dr Wahab A. Adam, Head and Missionary of Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana Sunday urged Ghanaians to make  Election 2012  successful by ensuring that political discourse and media reportage are devoid of foul language, abuse and recrimination.

He said  the nation had to keep its peaceful environment intact to foster socio-economic progress and every individual needed to play a part towards that.  

Maulvi Wahab was speaking to hundreds of Ahmadis on who converged at the grounds of the headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission at Ashongman for special prayers to celebrate Eid-ul-Adzha.

Eidul Adzha is a feast of animal sacrifice, which climaxes the annual Hajj devotion of Muslims across the globe.


It is celebrated with congregational worship (Salat) all over the world to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) of his son Ismail (Ishmael) to God.

On this day, pilgrims offer animal sacrifice to Allah at a place called Mina in Mecca and similar animal sacrifices are observed across the world.

The essence of the sacrifice is to part with something very dear to your heart to God as Ibrahim (Abraham) did by willing to sacrifice his son, Ismail.

Maulvi Wahab Adam said the festival signified obedience to Allah’s command and every Muslim must strive to emulate Ibrahim.

He advised that while observing the  Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam,  it was important  for celebrants to  avoid  foul language and indecent behaviour.

“The Hajj also brings to mind the sacrifices demanded of Muslims who were determined to turn a desolate land into developed and prosperous state,” he said.

He stressed that Eid-ul-Adzha, which marks the end of the rituals of the Hajj, should be considered as a means not only of moral and spiritual upliftment but a reminder of the crucial need of sacrifice in nation building.

Pilgrims to the Sacred House of Allah, he said, were urged to have respect for one another and uphold the requirements of human dignity irrespective of race, colour or political affiliation.

He led the congregation in prayer for unity, peace, progress and prosperity for the nation and called for unity and understanding among Muslim Communities to bring about development and social cohesion.
