Ghana: Religious leaders applaud President Mills for rejecting foreign blackmail and "bullying mentality"

On his part, the Ameer and Missionary in charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission said this is an independent country and we should be able to exert ourselves. He strongly commended the President for making Ghana’s position very clear on this matter.

Religious leaders have applauded President Mills for his firm anti-gay stand. The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Dr. Paul Frimpong-Manso said President Mills has demonstrated maturity and shown to Ghanaians that he wants to uphold sound and moral principles. He said that as much as we need resources to develop we cannot succumb to the dictates, whims and caprices of these donors. He said the President has marvelously put the head of the hammer on the nail.

He continued that if we can demonstrate that after 54 years of independence we are matured and can take our own responsibility in our own hands and manage the resources that we have very well and not seek for budget support to run our economy, they will respect us.

He said Ghana must begin to win herself from foreign aid and rather vigorously concentrate on developing and managing our resources for the good of the country.


On his part, the Ameer and Missionary in charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission said this is an independent country and we should be able to exert ourselves. He strongly commended the President for making Ghana’s position very clear on this matter.

He said Ghanaians should continue to support the President to do what is right for this country.

Ghana's President John Atta Mills on Wednesday rejected the UK's threat to cut aid if he refuses to legalise homosexuality. Mr Atta Mills said the UK could not impose its values on Ghana and he would never legalise homosexuality.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron said at the weekend that aid would be cut to countries which failed to respect gay rights.

Mr Atta Mills said Mr Cameron was entitled to his views, but he did not have the right to "direct to other sovereign nations as to what they should do".

He said Ghana's "societal norms" were different from those in the UK. "I, as president, will never initiate or support any attempt to legalise homosexuality in Ghana.

Uganda also rejected the threat, with an official accusing the UK of showing a "bullying mentality".

Most Africans have made it clear that homosexuality violates their religious and cultural beliefs.
