Islamabad: At least 16 people were injured as a bus with members of the minority Shia community was targeted with a roadside bomb in the restive Kurram tribal region of northwest Pakistan on Friday, officials said.

The explosive device was triggered by remote control in Parchar Khel area of Kurram Agency, Political Agent Shahab Ali Shah told reporters.

The bus was going from Parachinar, the main town in the semi-autonomous tribal region, to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Security personnel cordoned off the area and launched a search operation but were unable to make any arrests.

Kurram Agency, which has a sizeable Shia population, has been wracked by sectarian violence over the past four years.

Hundreds have died in fighting between rival Sunni and Shia tribesmen.

Two persons were killed and 20 more injured when a bus was targeted with a roadside bomb in Kurram Agency on March 12.
