More than 30,000 Ahmadiyya Muslims witnessed the arrival of their spiritual leader, the Khalifatul Masih V, at the International Centre in Mississauga this weekend.
His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, emphasized his message of peace at the 36th annual Jalsa Salana, a three-day convention that welcomed Ahmadiyyas from all over North America.
His Holiness visited Mississauga this afternoon on the final day of the convention as part of a tour throughout North America.
"Again and again, it is reminded that we should carry out the commandments of Allah," said His Holiness, who resides in the United Kingdom and last visited Canada in 2008.
"This is the duty of the Khalifa as Allah has always assisted and guided the Khalifa. I see Allah's blessing and help every moment of every day."
His Holiness shared letters from missionaries all over the world whose lives have been influenced by the faith of Islam.
He is the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and serves as the global spiritual and administrative leader of an international religious organization with tens of millions of followers across 200 nations.
Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, believed by followers to be the long awaited Promised Messiah, founded the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in 1889.
The purpose of the convention was to educate people on Islam and to spread the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Canada's message of love for all and hatred for none.
"This is our chance to educate the beautiful teachings of Islam," said Rizwan Rabbani, national executive director, department of faith outreach and communications, for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association of Canada.
"Islam is a very peaceful religion and this wool convention is about uplifting that faith … We say don't judge Islam by people, but rather judge people by Islam."
Visitors listened to recitations of the Holy Qur'an, the religious text of Islam as well as several other Islamic poems each day of the convention.
This afternoon, they were greeted by over 60 dignitaries, most of whom are city councillors, MPs or MPPs in the Greater Toronto Area.
Several of them expressed their gratitude towards the Khalifa while others were on hand to help with the presentation of more than 120 academic awards to Ahmadiyya students across Canada.
The convention was put together entirely by volunteers. Rabbani said the event took two weeks to set up and some volunteers helped cook more than 100,000 meals this weekend.
