The Amir of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’t, Nigeria, Dr Mashu’ud Fashola, has disclosed that Muslims have misunderstood Islam and Jihad.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Madrasatut Tahfidhul Quran Jamia Ahmadiyya, Ilaro, Ogun State, the religious leader said that the Holy Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammed have not allowed anybody to take the lives of his fellow beings.

He said that jihad did not mean that Muslims should go into war with anybody but rather  make life more meaningful to the people through the provisions of basic amenities.

“You have no right to kill or compel anybody to your religion. We should not allow Islam to suffer because Prophet Muhammed is not around. We should continue to project the image of the Prophet,” he said.

While noting that the Holy Quran would not perish, he said that it remains intact since its revealation to Prophet Muhammed.

He explained that the training of the young Muslims in the teachings of Islam was for the purpose of spreading the cause of Islam.

“To us Prophet Muhammed is still living. Believers constitute the manifestation of the Prophet. The objective of the training is to carry on the mission of Prophet Muhammed,” he declared.

Fashola charged the graduates to go out and preach the message with humility, warning that they should not arogate any honour to themselves.

According to him, they should see their training as a challenge, opportunity and trial.

While noting that Nigerians were fighting sectarian war, the religious leader said “you can be a Christian, Muslim or idol worshipper, there is no compulsion in religion.”

Those who are carrying out the war, he said were not of Islam, saying, “you cannot  compel anybody to your religion, they are only painting Islam in dark.”

“Jihad is not kill anybody. It is to sacrifice yourself for the welfare of the people,” he said.

He said that the organisation had involved in the service to mankind with the establishment of schools, farms, hospitals.
