FITCHBURG -- Just as the faith does around the world, members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Fitchburg celebrated Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, Sunday.

In the Community's downtown Masjid Bait-ul-Zikr, dozens of worshippers celebrated breaking their 29-day fast with a sermon, prayer and a social gathering, including many food offerings.

"We gather to rejoice and show happiness," said Bashir Mehmud, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. "It is a time of happiness. It is a time to come together for what we have accomplished and celebrate before the next fast."

Muslims of all ages attended Sunday's Eid al-Fitr, including 91-year-old Yusef Lateef, a Grammy Award- winning musician from Amherst. Lateef, a professor who teaches at UMass-Amherst and Hampshire College, has frequented the Fitchburg center since his conversion to the religion in 1948.

"It's a celebration of life and beliefs," Lateef said. "Every Muslim I've ever met has been good to me."
