An adopted excerpts from The Patriot-News story: Midstate Sikhs concerned about rise in hate crimes in wake of temple shootings
The violence in Wisconsin is a reminder that all faith groups are vulnerable.
“Every time something happens like this, we increase our security and walk with care, said Akram Khalid, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Central Pennsylvania.
"This is something we have feared since 9/11.”
A reformist Islamic movement, the Ahmadiyya Movement, founded in 19th-century India, believes God sent the prophet Ahmad to restore justice and morality. Khalid said all faiths have commonalities, particularly creeds of nonviolence.
“It’s a very sad occasion,” he said. “The senseless killings of people who were gathered together in religious congregation. That it has happened ... very tragic circumstances is something that makes me enormously sad.”
Khalid said terrorism and violence have never had a place in Islam or any other faith. He said everyone is entitled to a “comprehensive set of human rights.”
“This is my humble request to all faith leaders and all politicians: We should condemn such hate crime and work together for harmony, peace and interfaith, otherwise there will be no difference between Third World country and America,” Khalid said.

The Sikh religion, the world’s fifth-most-popular religion, is a monotheistic faith founded in the 15th century in South Asia. Sikh men typically do not cut their hair, wear turbans and grow long beards.
