Pakistan: Ramadan | A Time Of Increased Persecution For Many Muslims
As part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan, my Ramadan is not just about suhoor, iftar and five daily prayers. It’s more about how to survive this time as the so-called “holy jihadists” are more active and spiritually motivated than usual.

For Muslims around the world Ramadan is a time to rejoice, celebrate and grow spiritually. It is a time when a Muslim tries to spend more time in prayers and supplication to God in addition to abstaining from food and drinks for a prescribed amount of time.
But I am not going to tell you that story as everyone knows. What I will tell is how a persecuted Muslim community struggles during Ramadan in a “Muslim State.”
As part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan, my Ramadan is not just about suhoor, iftar and five daily prayers. It’s more about how to survive this time as the so-called “holy jihadists” are more active and spiritually motivated than usual.
So my Ramadan is to do all of the above plus to look out for the security of my family members, the elders of my community and everyone who comes to our mosque. It's a time to face increased persecution. It's a time to sacrifice not just our eating habits or abstain from evil deeds but to sacrifice lives for the sole reason of one's faith.
As Muslims who believe in the Messiah, we, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan, have faced persecution in this holiest of months for decades. Yet we continue to celebrate it with patience and forbearance, i.e., in the true spirit of Ramadan.
