France: 4 youngsters admit involvement in racism-based vandalism of Ahmadiyya mosque

EPERNAY (Marne). The author of the racist and nazi slogans made on the wall of the Ahmadiyya association are under custody. They were brought this morning to the prosecutor office of Châlons-en-Champagne.
"It is a great success for the police station of Epernay" the public prosecutor of Châlons-en-Champagne, Christian de Rocquigny, commented yesterday when announcing the custody of the youngsters responsible for the neo-nazis slogans and Bloc Identitaire stickers against the Ahmadiyya muslim association of Epernay. Facts happened in the night of the 7th to 8th november 2012, rue de l'Hôpital in Epernay. Two youngsters were detained into custody wednesday during the first process of arrestations then two others yesterday for the same reason.
The perpetrators, four 20 years-old youngsters, residents of the Epernay region,will be brought to the prosecutor office of Châlons-en-Champagne this morning to be presented before the competent tribunal for felony charges leveled by the prosecutor.
Incitement to racial hatred, destruction of another's property because of race and religion are the main charges against them. They face up to one year of imprisonment and a 45 000 euros fine.
Nazis symbols
"No mosques in my house" "Let's protest against these rascals", "Burqas, kebabs, mosques ... Enough! " could be read on the stickers affixed on the local Ahmadiyya Association's wall. Under the slogan logo of the association "Love for all hatred for none", the vandals had also tagged a swastika, a Celtic cross and the symbol of the Waffen-SS. These Nazi and such xenophobic slogans left the association and its pacifist forty members upset. A complaint was immediately filed.
Subsequent to these events, and after their media coverage, the association received early December two letters containing threats and racist insults. Two other complaints were then filed by the association. A thorough investigation including a large intelligence work provided by the departmental general information (SDIG) with joint and complementary investigations by the police station of Epernay has produced an anonymous informant about a piece of information. He led the BSU - urban security brigade - to a man who had the information on these events. From this source the investigators identified two names as people directly involved in the placement of tags and stickers. These young people were placed in custody Wednesday late morning at the police station of Epernay. A hearing was allowed to question two other boys about the same facts. Those were apprehended and placed them also in custody yesterday, while the first two were extended.
Clothing and Nazi flags found
At their hearing, each of the four youngsters admitted their individual participation to the allegations charged against them. One of them confessed he tagged while the other three put stickers.
The tagger also admitted he purchased the stickers on internet. During the home search, the investigators have found Nazi and neo-Nazis clothing and flags. During the investigation work, a civil servant of Epernay has conducted technical and scientific tests on the stickers affixed.
These tests, with additional work carried out by the comparison SRIJ, Regional Service Forensic Identification SRPJ Reims, helped corroborate to the evidence already in the possession of investigators.
The footprints of the tagger are also impressed on them.
"It is satisfying to public safety that the perpetrators are found. It is important not to let people worry "says the Commissioner of Epernay Benjamin Daubigny. "It is also a very good job of co-operation between police, both in intelligence and operation in the forensic work."
