Canada: Interfaith dialogue draws widespread interest

Rather than "Does God care about us," the question should be: "Do we care?"

That was the fundamental question posed by faith representative Muhammad Afzal Mirza at a recent interfaith dialogue organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in Peel.

“Allah says: ‘I won’t judge you on whether you believe in me or not — but since you’re human, I’ll judge you on what you do, especially to your fellow human being,’” said Mirza.

“Allah says: ‘You take care of my family.’ So it really leaves no room for us to misbehave with each other,” noted Mirza, who, while of the Ahmadiya faith, was informing the well-attended gathering of his view of the Muslim faith.

The other faith representatives at the event — Christian, Hindu and Sikh — echoed Mirza’s views, even if in their own, different words, namely that they were speaking for themselves, rather than professing to represent the entire faith, and that God says love thy fellow man.

The Christian point of view was put forth by Perry Spice, while Kumar Agarwal and Santbir Singh gave the Hindu and Sikh perspectives, respectively.

The event drew a sizeable audience composed of people from different faiths. Audience members put forth a number of questions in a lively interactive debate toward the end of the session.
