USA: Muni Bus Will Now Run Anti-Gay Ads to Accompany Anti-Islamic Ads on Buses

If you were just starting to move on from Michelle Shocked's "God Hates Fags" remark she made here in San Francisco this week, best you take a (Muni) seat to read this story.

Starting next month, Muni will run six bus ads featuring Muslim leaders bagging on gays. The Examiner reported the latest controversy over Muni bus ads, which seem to be a money-saving way to incorporate both phobias (Islam, homosexuals) in one ad campaign.

Here's one of the ads that you will soon see on Muni: The message quotes Yusuf al-Qaradawi of the Muslim Brotherhood saying, "The punishment of homosexuality is the death penalty." The ad ends saying "That's His Jihad. What's Yours?"

What the hell? Pamela Geller, head of the ad campaign which is funded by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, tells the Examiner that she was inspired to create the homophobic ads after hearing gay leaders in San Francisco denounce her Islamophobic ads.

Makes sense ... to Geller.

Still, she insists the politically charged ads will help, not hurt gays, even those riding Muni.

"The ads will increase awareness about the subjugation and oppression of gays under Shariah law," Geller said. "The gay community should be standing with me, not against me."

In a post on Geller's blog, she dedicates the latest ad campaign to Theresa Sparks, head of San Francisco's Human Rights Commission. Needless to say, Sparks was not pleased.

"She is posting these ads to suggest that all Muslims hate gays," Sparks tells the Ex.

We asked Muni Spokesman Paul Rose to enlighten us on the agency's logic in approving these ads.

"Though we disagree with the content of these ads, we don't believe it is right to spend the public's money and resources to litigate over AFDI's First Amendment rights," Rose told us this morning. "As a city agency, we believe we should focus on providing safe and reliable transportation services to the public."

So not only is your transportation not safe and reliable, but it's offensive, too.
