Interfaith: Pope Francis can promote religious tolerance | Letter

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I have always been taught how crucial tolerance is in attaining a peaceful society. My community's slogan, “Love for All, Hatred for None”, encourages an attitude of accepting the diversity in us as well as the similarity.

I want to congratulate the Roman Catholic Church and Catholics worldwide on the election of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

May this appointment move us forward in the pursuit of a more tolerant world where no race, religion, or country has precedence over another.

Peace has never been as relevant as it is today. If the Arab Spring and the Wall Street Movement represent a feeling of mass unrest against injustice, the Sandy Hook shooting indicates a lack of peace on an individual level.

Extremism is on the rise, be it religious or in the deterioration of moral values. It scares me that we are becoming more apathetic about violence and we laugh-off the concept of world peace.

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I have always been taught how crucial tolerance is in attaining a peaceful society. My community's slogan, “Love for All, Hatred for None”, encourages an attitude of accepting the diversity in us as well as the similarity. Is this teaching any different than what Jesus (peace be upon him) taught?

Interfaith peace requires a commitment in all of us to work side by side in a respectful and loving manner. It requires us to give due respect to religious figures like Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, Krishna, and more.

I am hopeful that the newly elected Pope recognizes the time's need to resolve religious animosity and encourages his followers to work for interfaith harmony.

His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, recently said in a press release, “I hope and pray that in the forthcoming era the Pope uses his influence to develop peace and harmony in the world.”

“Rather than increase division, the world desperately needs unity and compassion,” he said.
