Letter: Pakistan's Imran Khan earns worldwide scorn for bigoted remarks

We were the only religious community other than Agha Khanis to favour separation while all Imran’s kith and kin Mullah’s at the time and their parties were against the creation of Pakistan tooth and nail.

As an Ahmadi I condemn Imran Khan’s statement about our community. He is gravely mistaken about Ahmadis and appears to be fed by extremist Mullahs in his party.

Ahmadis have served Pakistan with the greatest of distinction, loyalty and service imaginable both during the Pakistan movement and after its formation.

Sir Zafarulla Khan the first Foreign Minister not only took India to UN making them defensive regarding Kashmir occupation but also extraordinarily fought for the freedom of Palestinians. Sir Khan was awarded highest honours by Jordan, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt for his contribution in their freedom struggles from colonialism. He was personal friend of Shah Faisal and worked together on various Muslim Umma’s issues when Faisal was Foreign Minister. No such “non-Muslim” has contributed so much for Islamic world in those early days duly recognized by Arab world too. He was the only person to have both presided UN General Assembly and International Court of Justice. He set the stage for Pakistan to be a beacon of light for the Muslims of the world.

Unfortunately later no leader built on the relationships to that level and it has deteriorated ever since. Pakistan’s potentials were all lost. Please read true history and not the one written by General Ziaul Haq, in fact Zia was very embarrassed to publically issue official statement about Sir Zafarulla’s death considering many of the Arab leaders used to inquire about his health from Zia on regular basis.

Dr Abdus Salam is considered one of the finest Theoretical Physicists of Twentieth Century who did not opt for citizenship of Britain or Italy. His 1979 Nobel prize award is the greatest Pakistani scientific moment thus far.

Lieutenant General Abdul Ali Malik (then Brigadier) fought the biggest tank battle against Indian Sherman tank battalion in 1965 saving North Punjab from a definite Indian occupation, the largest tank battle after World War II. His brother Lieutenant General Akhtar Hussain Malik was removed from “Operation Gibraltar” replaced by Yahya, who botched the whole operation in 1965 to cut off Indian supply lines for control of Kashmir.

The first General ranking officer who dies in line of duty was Major General Iftikhar Janjua killed in a helicopter crash in 1958.

M.M. Ahmed was a Finance Minister in 1971 whose timely and excellent policies protected Pakistan from Indian subversion of currency after defeat on the Bengali front.

Let me inform Imran Khan that the first Cancer treatment centre in Pakistan was built in Mayo Hospital Lahore which was put together by yet another Ahmadi, Professor Dr Muhammad Yaqub Khan, a radiologist graduated from Britain in 1937s and professor at King Edward’s in Lahore who migrated to Pakistan to serve.

I have omitted the great services of Mirza Mahmood Ahmad (1889-1965) and Mirza Nasir Ahmad (1909-1982) as Heads of the community rendered during several testing times for Pakistan.

It is difficult to summarise those in few lines.

We were the only religious community other than Agha Khanis to favour separation while all Imran’s kith and kin Mullah’s at the time and their parties were against the creation of Pakistan tooth and nail. We can go on and on.

I condemn his statement with strongest of sentiments.
