Its goal is to collect 12,000 pints of blood nationwide by Oct. 11 for the “Muslims for Life” blood drive campaign. After five hours outside Stewart Center at Purdue University the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA was 18 pints closer.
That may not seem like much, but Muzaffar Ahmad, treasurer and spokesman for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Indiana, considered the day a success.
Ahmad is part of a worldwide organization, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a 150-year-old group focused on public outreach, such as building hospitals, schools and sponsoring public blood drives, he said.
The organization partnered with Indiana Blood Center for Monday’s drive.

“In the U.S. we are trying to organize these blood drives around 9/11, to collect blood and tell fellow Americans that Islam is a peaceful religion,” Ahmad said. “Mostly what they see on TV is that Islam somehow has this terrorism problem.”
The problem is with certain people, not the religion, he said.
The next Indiana blood drive is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., Indianapolis.
