As a Muslim-American, I am proud of my faith and equally thankful that I am a citizen of a great country where diversity is valued and allowed to thrive — thus enriching the fabric of this nation.

Regarding the Nov. 19 story, "A first for Broward: Black woman named county mayor:"
Broward County Commissioners have elected a black, Muslim woman as mayor. I concur that this development is a testament to the diversity that is characteristic of South Florida. The newly elected mayor has proudly embraced her Muslim identity despite the risk it entails.
I sincerely hope that northern counties in Florida gain inspiration from this landmark achievement. They must resist efforts that are geared toward disenfranchisement of minorities — particularly Muslims. America is a great nation that thrives and flourishes on diversity. Let us celebrate all attempts toward this goal.
As a Muslim-American, I am proud of my faith and equally thankful that I am a citizen of a great country where diversity is valued and allowed to thrive — thus enriching the fabric of this nation. Islamic faith and traditions espouse gratitude and thankfulness — a theme that lies at the core of Thanksgiving celebrations. The congruence of these values lets me embrace my faith and nationality with immense pride.
