Canada: Ahmadiyya Muslim Community takes Happy New Year gifts to Peterborough

“Our community is reaching out to different towns and cities to serve the people in need all over the world. The same people who have driven here from Toronto  previously served the homeless people of downtown Toronto on the evening of the Eid-ul Adhiya, a Muslim festival which signifies brotherhood and sacrifice.”

Many Canadians all over the country eagerly wait for a white Christmas and a Happy New Year. With the ground covered with snow and the environment filled with lights and colors, it’s an ideal way to end their year for many. And while it’s a day for celebration and meeting friends and family, it is often quite easy to forget the less fortunate ones in our festivity and excitement.

To remind us that we owe a duty to the less privileged ones of our society, eight members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Toronto Region drove to Peterborough a city about 150 km from Toronto to provide for the homeless.  Members of the community visited the Brock Mission in Peterborough which is a shelter for homeless men and endeavors to provide emergency crisis shelter, food, clothing and support to those in our community who find themselves in need. A total of about 100 gift packs were prepared by the community which consisted of the essential clothing accessories such as gloves, socks and woolen hats to deal with the Canadian winter.

“Our community is reaching out to different towns and cities to serve the people in need all over the world,” said Khalid Dawood, Imam of Toronto mosque. “The same people who have driven here from Toronto  previously served the homeless people of downtown Toronto on the evening of the Eid-ul Adhiya, a Muslim festival which signifies brotherhood and sacrifice.”

Naveed Mangla, missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community was glad to see that members of the community had come out to serve. “It is really important that we care for the less privileged ones of our society, we want these people to have a nice new year and I hope our modest presents make a contribution” said Naveed.

Cori Macduff, the food service manager for the Brock Mission facilitated the project and was thankful to the volunteers who had taken time out and had travelled all the way from Toronto to make their contribution.
