A bookstall set up by the Mumbai chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community was attacked by a Muslim mob in an attempt to run the organizers out.
The community had participated in a public Book Fair at the MMRDA Grounds in Bandra Kurla, Mumbai, India.
The incident took place at the Book Fair organized by the National Book Trust (NBT) of India, a government run organization, which started on the 29th November and will run until the 3rd of December.
While the bookstall organizers and volunteers were busy managing their books during the first 3 days, it is learned, the plans were being hatched at a nearby bookstall to upset the success of the Ahmadiyya bookstall.
"Plenty of non-Ahmadi Muslims kept coming and had a lot of discussions, some of them obviously did not like our presence there," wrote one of the Ahmadi bookstall volunteer to Ahmadiyya Times.
Reportedly, the owner of another book stall had objections towards the Ahmadiyya presence and on Sunday morning a group of Muslims met the Book Fair administration and asked them to shutdown the Ahmadiyya bookstall.
The Book Fair administration refused the demand saying the complainants must declare reasons in writing for considerations.
Later in the evening a mob of over 50 hooligans, reportedly belonging to Muslim Milli Council of India, descended upon the organizers and rudely demanded shutdown of the Ahmadiyya stall.
The group lodged written complaint with Book Fair organizers claiming that the Ahmadis were 'propagating against Islam”.
The mob intimidated and abused a female staff member of the NBT organizers and threatened they will cause havoc, destroy, and even “KILL” (“Kaat denge”) in order to shutdown the Ahmadiyya bookstall..
Both sides had gone to the area police station (Bandra Kurla) and lodged written complaints on Sunday night.
The local police have determined there is no reason to shutdown the Ahmadiyya bookstall and gave them the clearance to 'carry on with it'.
Police said they will provide four constables for security and safety at the Ahmadiyya bookstall.
