It has been three years since Egypt staged an uprising, which is continuing even to this day. The turmoil has resulted in many deaths, numerous governments toppled and has brought the country to a stand-still. Even to mark the third anniversary of this so-called “Arab Spring,” protests broke out in Egypt and dozens of individuals were killed.
The government of Egypt created divisions amongst the populace. The country wants to experience the same level of democracy as the West. Yet, the harsh reality as stated by the leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, is that, “if they wish to emulate democracy, they have to inculcate tolerance.”
As an Ahmadi Muslim, I wish I could say I am surprised at the uprising in Egypt, but Holy Quran foretold of governments usurping the rights of citizens by stating, “corruption has spread on land and sea.” I hope and pray that Egypt is removed from the turmoil it is presently engulfed in and that its people learn to emulate true democracy and embrace peace.
