Let’s ask ourselves a question: Is our Lord happy with us?
We all know that Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, which this year happens to be June 15. Many of us may surely have various sincere plans for this day. But how can we make this year’s Father’s Day different and better? And how can we try that with each passing year we also improve the realization of our responsibilities toward our parents?
One way to show our respect and love for our parents can be to recognize their true status. Once a man complained about his father to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) that his father used to take his belongings whenever he liked. The Prophet (Pbuh) called for his father, who was a very old man, and asked him the details of the matter.
The father said, “O, Messenger of God, there was a time when my son was weak and helpless and bare handed while I had strength and wealth. I never hesitated to give him my belongings whenever he needed them. Today I am weak and bare handed while he is rich and now he keeps his belongings from me.” Hearing this, tears came to the eyes of the Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) and he said to the son: “You and your belongings belong to your father. You and your belongings belong to your father.”
No wonder due to this exemplary moral training by Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh), one of the companions of the Prophet (Pbuh) is reported to have said that the son should never call his father by name and neither to walk ahead of him nor to take seat before he takes the seat first in a gathering.
So why not pledge to ourselves that each Mother’s Day or Father’s Day will also serve as a reminder for us, that we need to celebrate these days every day. This will surely please our parents and bring us true happiness. And above all it will hopefully make our Lord pleased with us as well.
Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) said on this subject, “The Lord's pleasure is in the parent's pleasure, and the Lord's anger is in the parent's anger.”
May we all have a distinctive Father’s Day this year !
