Perspective: Attack on innocents in Pakistan | Letter

Although I am not surprised by the attack and the fact that police failed to come to the rescue of these people due the state-facilitated persecution of members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan, I was astonished by the victims: innocent women and children in their homes.

On July 27 in Gujranwala, Pakistan, a group of people angered by an alleged act of blasphemy identified few Ahmadi Muslim homes and set them on fire. This left three, including a 7-year-old and an 8-month-old, to die from suffocation.

Although I am not surprised by the attack and the fact that police failed to come to the rescue of these people due the state-facilitated persecution of members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan, I was astonished by the victims: innocent women and children in their homes.

Pakistan’s constitution prohibits Ahmadis from associating in any way with Islam and Ordinance XX goes on to criminalize all such actions.

President Obama once stated that “nations that uphold the rights of their people, including freedom of religion, are ultimately more just, peaceful and successful.” Pakistan, by oppressing the religious freedom of minorities has sewed the bitter seed of hatred, lawlessness, violence and extremism.
