A group of Buddhist extremists yesterday invaded the venue of a UN war crime probe and disrupted a meeting of families of missing people held there.
A website linked to Sri Lanka's Sinhala nationalist Minister Wimal Weerawansa reported that a group of Sri Lankans had testified via Skype before the UN panel probing the war crime charges against the Sri Lankan government.
The website stated that the testifying had taken place at the meeting held in Center for Society and Religion in Colombo yesterday and several officials of the U.S. Embassy in Colombo had also came to the meeting.
The attacking mob was led by Buddhist monk Aguladalle Jinananda Thera who told media that the slain Tamil Tiger cadres could not be considered as disappeared persons.
The U.S. Embassy protested the disruption of the meeting and said the meeting that included Embassy officials was interrupted by angry protesters, including a group of monks.
The Embassy said that the local police appeared to be in support of the mob efforts to shut down the meeting, though after discussions with diplomatic officials the police did effectively calm the situation.
Meanwhile Sinhala daily The Divaina also reported that UN probe panel appointed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay via Skype had obtained testimonies of about 30 witnesses in the country. The witnesses have not been identified, it said.
The report further said that the panel had collected evidence to produce an oral report at the 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council scheduled to be held in September in Geneva.
The Tamil National Alliance MP Suresh Premachandran has said that the party has a vast amount of information against the government, The Divaina reported.
Sri Lanka has flatly rejected the international probe and the Minister of Media and Information has vowed that the government would thoroughly deal with the people who give information to the panel.
