Perspective: Canada's PM Harper was wrong … | Shakil Mirza

His argument has major flaws. To outlaw the niqab would be unconstitutional, one of the reasons Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney left the matter to citizenship ceremony judges.

Re: They Have Neither The Law Nor The Facts, Michael Spratt; They Are Sure To Lose. Maybe That Is The Point, Richard Moon, both, March 18.

“Our job is making all groups who come to this country, whatever their background, whatever their religion, feel at home in this country and be Canadians.” It seems as if Prime Minister Stephen Harper forgot his own words as documented by the 2013 Canadian Human Rights Commission.

His argument has major flaws. To outlaw the niqab would be unconstitutional, one of the reasons Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney left the matter to citizenship ceremony judges.

The PM’s statement about the niqab being “anti-women” is ignorant, misogynistic and Islamophobic. He also says his views are not just those of most Canadians, but also of moderate Muslims, as if the opinion of one group has bearing on an individual’s right to exercise freedom of choice.

My mother is a Canadian citizen and an Ahmadiyya Muslim who wears the niqab. As president of a women’s group in our community, she is an example of how women can be leaders, no matter what societal pressures dictate on minorities.
